Exquisite Springbok Antelope Design by Coert Steysberg
Obverse: On the obverse is a left-side portrait of the fifth President of the South African Republic, Paul Kruger. The design, which is the work of Otto Schultz. He is joined by inscriptions of the name of the issuing country in Afrikaans, “SUID-AFRIKA,” and English, “SOUTH AFRICA.”
Reverse: Coert Steynberg’s springbok antelope design graces the reverse. The stunning creature, which is the issuing country’s national symbol, is flanked by the numerals in the date, “20” on the left and “23” to the right. The name of the coin, “KRUGERRAND,” is inscribed along the rim at the top, while its metal content is noted in Afrikaans and English below, “FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER,” Coert Steynberg was a prolific sculptor and medalist. His work earned him numerous awards.
