Obverse: Both faces of this coin bear designs that come from James Earle Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel. On the obverse is a composite portrait of an aging Native American man. He is joined by the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “2023.”
Reverse: Fraser’s reverse design features an American bison in left-side profile. By the animal are the two statutory mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” as well as the coin’s face value, “$50.” Along the rim are inscriptions of the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and the metal content of the coin, “1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD.” James Earle Fraser was a prolific sculptor whose work can still be seen at numerous sites in and around Washington, DC.
