Featuring the Striking Liberty Design of Anthony de Francisci
Obverse: Anthony de Francisci designed both faces of this coin. His obverse design shows Liberty facing left with a radiate crown on her head. The national motto, “IN GOD WE TRVST,” is inscribed near the image. Above and below along the rim are the central figure’s name, “LIBERTY,” and the date, “1934.”
Reverse: The morning sun shines on an eagle, which is perched on a rocky crag in de Francisci’s reverse design. Near the bird is an inscription of the face value of the coin, “ONE DOLLAR,” while the coin’s name, “PEACE,” is below. At the top of this face are inscriptions of the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and the statutory motto, “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” Anthony de Francisci was a protege of Adolph Weinman. An immigrant from Italy, he is best known for designing the Peace Dollar.
