The 2023 British 1 oz Gold Britannia Coin-King Type is one of those coins that was just meant to be. The reverse side of the coin has Britannia clad in a breastplate and a helmet and wielding a trident in her right hand. In her left hand, she has a shield with the Union flag and an olive branch. Arched above her is ‘Britannia 2023 1 oz 999.9 Fine Gold’. Below the image is ‘NATHAN’ for Phillip Nathan, the artist.
The obverse features King Charles III as designed by Martin Jennings. Jennings is most known for his beautiful busts of famous literary figures like George Orwell and Charles Dickens. In this design we see King Charles looking to the left. Engraved around his portrait are the initials “D.G. REX F.D. which are abbreviations for the Latin phrase which means “By God’s Grace, King. Defender of the Faith’. To the right of his portrait is “100 Pounds” reminding us that this is a legal tender backed by the British Government.
