The modern Silver Britannia series has been in production by The Royal Mint since 1997. Two different bullion varieties of the Silver Britannia series have been issued with the date of 2023, as the Mint transitions the series from a coin of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, to a release under the monarchy of His Majesty King Charles III. Over the centuries, the direction of the coinage profile has traditionally altered with each new monarch, therefore the King is portrayed facing left, in opposition to the right facing image of the late Queen. Breathtaking Rendition of Britannia

Obverse: The first coin’s obverse is adorned with an effigy of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The late monarch is depicted facing right, encircled by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “D.G. REG. F.D.” and “2 POUNDS.” This fifth and final definitive coinage portrait of the Queen was designed in 2015 by renowned British sculptor Jody Clark. The second coin features an image of His Majesty King Charles III on the obverse, in a left facing pose, surrounded by the inscriptions “CHARLES III,” “D.G. REX. F.D.” and “2 POUNDS.” This interpretation of the King’s likeness, which is recognized as the first definitive coinage portrait, is credited to acclaimed British sculptor Martin Jennings. The monarch’s image received the personal approval of His Majesty the King.

Reverse: The reverse of each coin bears the Coin of the Year (COTY) Award winning design created by British sculptor Philip Nathan for the introduction of the Gold Britannia series in 1987. Lady Britannia is standing in defense of Great Britain, with a trident, an olive branch and a patriotic shield in hand. Inscribed “BRITANNIA,” “2023,” “1 OZ” and “999 FINE SILVER.” The security elements incorporated into the image include finely etched heraldic tincture lines to delineate the Union Jack symbol upon Britannia’s shield, a light-refracting wave surface animation in the background, a small circular badge which contains a graphic that morphs from a trident to a padlock when the coin is tilted, and a minuscule border surrounding Britannia containing the repeating inscription “DECUS ET TUTAMEN,” a Latin phrase meaning “an ornament and a safeguard.”
