The California Gold Rush created a unique problem for prospectors and those who bought the gold from them. What could you do with them? How could you use them to buy things? The United States Congress passed the Coinage Act of 1849 authorizing the creation of gold coins. The $20 Double Eagle coin was one of those coins. The first design was what has become to be called the Double Eagle coin. There were changes to the design off and on over the years and at some point, it was decided to change the design on the reverse side of the coin to James Longacre’s design.  This addition ran from 1866-1876 and was later nicknamed a Type 2 design. Due to the smaller window of time, it was offered, this coin has become more rare to find.

On the obverse of the coins is Lady Liberty in portrait facing to the left. She looks like a Greek statue wearing a coronet in her hair. The coronet has ‘LIBERTY’ written on it. Arched around her at the edge of the coin are 13 stars representing the original 13 colonies. The year of issue is shown below the image.

The reverse side of the coin was designed by James B. Longacre and features a heraldic eagle with its wings spread wide apart and the national shield on its chest. Brackets are coming off the shield that have ‘E PLURIBUS UNUM’ on them. Sun rays are emanating from the eagle’s head. ‘In God We Trust’ is written above the eagle. Written above the design at the coin’s edge is ‘THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’. Below the image is ‘TWENTY D’.
