Exquisite Liberty Design by Anthony de Francisci
Obverse: Anthony de Francisci designed both faces of this coin. On the obverse, Liberty faces left donning a radiate crown. Her effigy splits an inscription of the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRVST.” Inscribed along the rim are the name of the central figure, “LIBERTY,” and the date, “1934.”
Reverse: On the reverse, an eagle is perched on a rocky crag against a backdrop of the rays of the morning sun. The coin’s face value, “ONE DOLLAR,” is inscribed by the bird, and the name of the coin, “PEACE,” is at the bottom. Arching over the eagle are inscriptions of the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and a statutory motto, “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” Anthony de Francisci was an Italian immigrant who was mentored by Adolph Weinman. The Peace Dollar is his most famous numismatic contribution.
