Novel Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
Obverse: George T. Morgan designed both faces of this half-dollar. His obverse design shows Liberty wearing a ribbon and a Phrygian cap. Morgan’s selection of an American-style model, Anna Willess Williams, for the figure departed from the tradition of using Greek-style models for her. Along the rim are two inscriptions, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1898,” and thirteen stars.
Reverse: On the reverse, an eagle stretches its wings toward the rim while holding arrows and an olive branch. The national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is inscribed above its head, and an open wreath partially encircles the bird. The issuing country’s name, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and the coin’s face value, “ONE DOLLAR,” are noted on the rim. George T. Morgan was the seventh man to serve as the US Mint’s Chief Engraver. This series is by far his most famous work.
